Introducing the Commando Groove, OPSTs new Dual-Density Floating/Intermediate Heads. Featuring the same popular and effective taper designed by Skagit Guru Ed Ward, now in a floating rear third and an intermediate front to really slow down that swing and presentation, along with getting that head and tip under the conflicting surface currents for a more user-friendly swing as well! Available in Commando Head Sizes ranging from 200 grains all the way up to 475 grains, to cover all your needs on the water. Same great Commando Heads now in dual density-intermediate to round out your Pure Skagit quiver. Slide into that slot with the Commando Groove!
This line has also turned into one of our favorites systems for casting overhead in the surf. This head pairs really well with the 10 foot sinking skagit tips we’ve always loved from rio.
The sinking tips we like out in the surf for this setup are the:
- Rio Skagit Mow Light Tip – (8 grains per foot = 80 grains)
- Rio Skagit Mow Medium Tip – (11 grains per foot = 110 grains)
The thing you need to take into account is that your head should only be 2/3 of your final grain weight. Your tip will account for that final 1/3 and is ABSOLUTELY necessary for this system to work.
For example:
An 8wt Rio Outbound Short is around 330 Grains
- For this system I would look at a 225 grain Groove head
- This would pair with a 10′ Rio Skagit Light Tip which is around 80 Grains
225 Grain head + (tip: 8×10= 80g) = 305 Grains
This compact system can really change things for you out in the surf. Sometimes one of the hardest things to learn out there is to learn to carry 30 feet of the shooting head out the tip of the rod in order for it to load properly. With the more compact 25 foot system, it can be night and day
